"Just keep very silent and still," I spoke, "my friend has a gun and this knife could cause a bad leak."
Mancole got the wallet, a separate wad, his change . . . I slipped off his watch, a real sparkler, and tapped his two rings. He handed them over.
We told him we were going to excuse ourselves now. I put my hand to his hair:
"That's really pretty hair. We like long hair." (He had no way of knowing my hair was even longer than his because I stuff it all under a beret I wear so I won't be recognized, I made out like I was down on long hairs too.)
202 I JIM CARROLL
"We like long hair because it's easy to get a good grip on it when you slit a person's throat if he yells for the cops within the next ten minutes."
(This tough ass rap I would spin off while taking a sap off never ceased to amaze me. Actually, it helps cover up the sound of my two knee caps chattering against each other.)
But now we're back at Headquarters totalling up: Five twenty dollar bills and one ten in the wallet, the wad was very thick but it turned out to be all singles, thirty-one. The watch is a fairly new Bulova and could get a nice price for hock . . . one nice jade ring and one with his initials and fake birthstones surrounding it. Today turned out to be worth the fears . . . and for the next few days we're gonna be sleeping late.
SUMMER 66
Was rapping with an old friend and dope hustling companion Franky Pinewater tonight up at Headquarters. He's got a beautiful head and we've spent a lot of nights together on acid on rooftops at night digging the star dome and rapping about the mystic. Thing is that Franky's about five years older than me so when we started using scag a few years back he didn't have school to hold him back from a heavy habit like me, so he did go all out from the beginning. Thus he's been very down and out for quite a while and I'm just feeling the pains of my first habit. I never thought he'd end up strung out, but like we were saying tonight: both peyote and opium grow from the earth, and though all the hip dudes are

running around raving about all the knowledge of the cosmos peyote gives, who's to say the poppy has no secrets either . . . and though it was me that spouted that theory I don't think I really believe it.
Anyway Franky was telling me how his mother, a fanatical Irish Catholic like so many of the old ladies around here, was just so sick of all the cures he took that failed that she decided to drag him off to High Mass last Sunday and go through the whole bit. It seems Franky had been getting back into the Faith himself lately, reading a lot of Bible and all, and was all for a play at Mass again.
